Graded Salience Hypothesis : ウィキペディア英語版
Graded Salience Hypothesis
Graded Salience Hypothesis is the theory regarding irony processing developed by Rachel Giora, that assumes the priority of salient over less salient meaning in the process of language comprehension.〔Giora Rachel. 2002. "Literal vs. figurative language: Different or equal?", ''Journal of Pragmatics'' 34: 487-506.〕
== Lexical salience ==

The meaning of a word is considered salient, if it is coded in the mental lexicon.〔Huang, Mimi Ziwei. 2009. “Solving the riddle of metaphor: A salience-based model for metaphorical interpretation in a discourse context”, in: New Directions in cognitive linguistics. John Benjamins Publishing Company, 107-126.〕 Still, the degree of salience of a given word meaning cannot be viewed as a permanent, defining characteristic, but rather as a function of a number of factors, such as frequency, conventionality, familiarity, and prototypicality. The more frequent, conventional, familiar, or prototypical a given word meaning is, the greater degree of salience it holds.〔Kecskes Istvan. 2006. "On my mind: thought about salience, context and figurative language from a second language perspective": ''Second Language Research'' 22,2: 1-19.〕
